Tuesday, January 12, 2010Movie: Best Seller (1987)Time again for a question that’s a hobbyhorse around here: whatever happened to sleaze? Where’s a guy gotta go to get served up a cocktail of sex, violence and cynicism? Oh, right. Videogames. If I want the cinematic variety, I have to return to the cable staples of my youth. 6 Comments:
I think you like BEST SELLER better than I do, but it's a fun thriller with a clever premise and a thin plot that was badly marketed as a buddy movie. Sometime after this, Woods was hosting or presenting at the Cable ACE awards (hammered, I'm pretty sure) and gave the Rickles routine to Dennehy in the crowd, so I think they make actually have gotten along very well.
It's not a great movie by any stretch, but it held up better than I thought it would. I remember that award show, too.
I like the movie's ambience, the urban anxiety played off against the trip back to Woods' home. If more movies reached this level of passion and competence I'd buy a lot more movie tickets.
"Wild Things" happened to sleaze, I think. Once you've gone that sleazy there's nowhere else to go. Sex, lipstick lesbians, Kevin's bacon and Bill Murray in his wilderness years (or whatever) I don't think it gets much sleazier without splicing in Marilyn Monroe's porn tape in the credits once they've got the final twist out the way.
