    Movie: Slither (2006)

If horror movies are so big right now, how is it that this ridiculously entertaining one – which scored good reviews to boot – came and went earlier this year without even leaving a slimy trail behind? I’m kicking myself for missing it in the theater, or even better, a drive-in; if ever there was a film to see with an audience, this bad boy is it. Still, it’s available on DVD in time to make your Halloween.

Troma veteran James Gunn returns to the gory glory days of ‘80s schlock, concocting not one, not two, but three ways for his characters to buy it: extraterrestrial squid being, parasitic slugs, and acid-coughing zombies. Firefly’s Nathan Fillion is our dimwitted, sarcastic hero. There’s also another great performance from Elizabeth Banks, a Chez K favorite thanks to The 40-Year-Old Virgin and her appearance as the world’s loveliest New York Giants fan in Invincible. (Rosemarie favors the Jets.) Plus in-jokes and homages galore. Pick this one up. It delivers the gruesome goods.

    Miscellaneous: Boo!

Slither did no business (as I believe the phrase goes) and so didn't even get to the theatres in Europe -- well, not Germany or Austria where it was much anticipated by at least two people.

I got it on DVD last week and it's a whole heap o' fun. It also reminded me in someways of Bubba Ho-Tep. It's feels like it a little bit of a throwback, it takes it's good time to get to the action so that the characters can be developed enough and it's witty and funny without being an out-and-out comedy.

Which brings me to a question that was bothering over the weekend. Is Nathan Fillion quickly becoming the new Bruce Campbell or is there a big hit in his near future that will make him a bit more than that?

Boy howdy, as the kids back on the farm used to say! I missed Slither in the theater, and how I wish I hadn't. But on top of that, I missed it at the drive-in too! I took my nieces to see a double feature of Scary Movie 4 and Slither, but by the time the crap comedy was over, the youngest (11 years old) had convinced herself that Slither was going to be too scary, so we left. And she was right-- it would have been too scary for her. But for me, ah, sublime sublimity. One can only hope that a movie that's this much fun will find a long life on DVD as a cult classic. And that Elizabeth Banks-- [ Sound of Enthusiastic Purring ] If I turned into a giant mutant slug from another world, I'd wanna hang onto her too!
